June Birchbox

I know, I'm almost late on this post!  It's amazing how these summer days just get eaten up by little things.  So as I wait for my oil change to be finished up, let's talk Birchbox this June.

Many months get cute themes and June was all about "Away We Go"
Personally this just reminds me that I'm staying put this summer, which is not my norm, but I was excited to see what items they thought would be good travel buddies.

Do you find these items travel essentials? Other than their handy size, I'm not sure they top my list matching the theme, but I am excited.  Which am I most excited by???  Glad you asked ;)

#1 Cynthia Rowley Creamy Lip Stain.
I have been eyeing Cynthia Rowley products for a while now.  I can't get enough of that adorable packaging so you can imagine how thrilled I was when I discovered this goodie in my box.  It happened to be my last sample pulled out.  The color is fun and bright making it a perfect summer pick.

#2 Evologie Stay Clear Cleanser.
I'm a cleanser junkie.  I've yet to discover that one face wash that just blows my socks off making me curious and a bit "too" excited to get a new one ;)  I'm even more excited since this wash is all about getting rid of those pesky break outs.  As much as I hate to admit it, my skin hasn't been to happy with me as of late, so maybe Birchbox box will have given me a solution.  Fingers crossed.

#3 Number 4 Super Comb Prep & Protect.
Birchbox appears to have decided my favorite brand is Number 4.  It seems every box I have a sample from them, which is starting to feel a bit excessive.  That being said, this is a useful product to get especially during summer.  My poor hair needs all the protection it can get from all this sun.

The other samples didn't make my top list for a few reasons.  I actually have a full sized and sample of Benefit's they're real mascara.  I was a bit surprised with this sample since it has made it's way around the beauty world for a few years now.  Don't get me wrong, I will definitely use it up but I would have preferred a something different from the amazing brand of Benefit.  Regarding the fragrance, it's alright.  I'm quite picky about smells and prefer clean scents.  Once again this is my second month in a row receiving a fragrance sample.

Just in case you're wondering, here is Birchbox's write up on my samples this June:

Overall this was pretty good month.  If I gave it a grade (since I am a teacher) I think it would a B- mostly due to all the repeat brands and product types.  I received a sample from Cynthia Rowley last month as well as Number 4 Hair.  Oh and it looks like my July box is repeating another set of products: Cynthia Rowley Lip Stain and Ruffian Nail Polish!  With so many duplicates and twins, I'm starting to wonder if Birchbox is worth the money.  I am looking for some variety and don't hate repeat brands, but they shouldn't ever be in back to back boxes.

There you have it!  My thoughts on June's Birchbox.  Hope your day is filled with sunshine :)

Beauty Steal: Sephora Samples + Flash Shipping

Hey there lovelies!  I hope your Thursday has been painless, just think tomorrow is Friday.  That is always a good sign :)

Today I'm sharing a little trick of mine.  About a year ago, Sephora asked if I wanted to become a "my flash" member.  For a small fee, I get free, 2-day shipping on all my orders.  I LOVE this feature because it allows me to buy one product at a time, get 3 samples, and take advantage of special offers without always having to spend 50 dollars.  Sounds pretty great right?

Well it's about to get just a little better!

If you haven't noticed, I love getting samples and am subscribed to a few monthly beauty boxes.  I even wrote a post on which subscription is right for you.  Most start at 10 dollars and include 3-5 samples.  Here is my trick to get 3 samples for just a dollar.

Since I am a bit obsessed, I love to check Sephora daily to see what samples they are offering.  I'm always seeing if a favorite is featured or something new that grabs my interest.  Before this was just out curiosity; however, now it is me shopping.  When I find a good day, I put the samples in my cart and then head over to my other favorite spot "sale."  Most days I can find the ribbon hair tie for just a dollar.  Personally I love these hair ties as they don't snag my hair and look sporty & cute.  With my flash shipping, these hand picked samples and my dollar hair tie get shipped to me super quick.

Now that is a beauty steal :)

Here is my most recent delivery.
I choose a neutral color tie since I typically always purchase bright ones.  Also I'm thrilled to try the red clay mask; it had great reviews!

Dior is such a lovely brand especially with lippies.  Plus I never pass up a sample with more than one color or you know, FOUR ;)

My final sample is a Living Proof trio.  This sample was recently featured at Ulta as a bonus with a $25 Living Proof purchase.  Here I paid only a buck to try it along with the others.

I hope all your beauty addicts can take advantage on my discovery.  If nothing else, check out Sephora's sample offering before clicking purchase.  Some days are much better than others.  If you can wait a few days, I would until your samples feel worth it.  Also if you are interested in the flash program click here to read more about it and enroll!

Happy (early) Friday!

Foil Packet Trick

Groan.
Grunt.
Sigh.  Double Sigh.
These are often noises you'll hear from me when I start interacting with foil packet samples.  While I LOVE, Love, LOVVVVE to sample new products and do just about anything to score some, I really loose my mind trying to get product out of these.  After you have fought with that innocent "tear here" mark and have manically searched for scissors, you find that you end up with time wastes, product everywhere, and perhaps have pitched that sample.

Ready for some good news?  The solution is simple and will help you fall in love with these frequent freebies.

I like my solutions simple, materials need minimal, and cost low.  So here you just need your sample and a straight pin.  I imagine a push pin would do in a pinch although you will lose a bit of your control.

All you need to do is simply slide the straight pin into the foil packet making sure not to pierce through both sides.

This creates a tiny hole to squeeze product through giving you complete control on the amount used.  Gone are the days you have wasted sample with a big squeeze or have sticky product on the edge of a packet tempting you to pitch the mess. It also keeps air from getting into the packet helping the shelf life your sample!  I've gotten weeks out of open packets with no change to the consistency of primers, gels, moisturizers, or foundations!

I love using the trick because I truly get every last drop of sample out and typically more uses out of that tiny foil packet.  Plus if I am traveling with a packet (I know who would subject themselves to such madness), I can just wrap it in tissue and I barely get any leakage.  To me that is quite a happy ending to the once villain in my beauty sampling story.

I hope you can use this trick to bring back a little love for these foil freebies.

June Ipsy Bag

Hello lovelies!  How goes it?  I spent my day with a few friends having a late breakfast at our favorite diner and then seeing 22 Jump Street.  I always enjoy a good comedy especially one with Channing Tatum.

My mom and I have a tradition of opening our Ipsy bags together and I thought I would share my goodies with you.  I always like to see what others have received and hear what they have to say about the products.

June Products:
Marc Anthony Dream Waves Beach Spray {$3} full size $9
Be a Bombshell Lash Out Mascara {$15}
OFRA Eyebrow Pencil in Universal {$13}
NYX Butter Gloss in Creme Brûlée {$5}
Realtree for Her Fragrance full size $25

Lots of fun, full sized products this month in the Pretty in Paradise bag.  I think I am most excited to try the Dream Waves Beach Spray.  I love having textured waves and good beach spray can really help create a bit of curl in my hair.   The scent is delicious pineapple and coconut making me dream of Pina Coladas on a beach :)

Also I have been quite obsessed with my brows recently so trying a new pencil is intriguing.  The consistency is quite creamy and soft.  Plus the color suites my brows well.  Bonus! It appears a touch dark for my mom, but with a little blending it will work for her as well so perhaps it is a true universal color.

On the right is the OFRA brow pencil in universal while the left swatch is the NYX butter gloss in creme brûlée.  It is my favorite shade from them so I find it a great bonus to have a back up.  If you haven't tried their glosses before, you should especially if you have an Ulta around and can get them on sale.  The smell is a yummy vanilla and the color is a gorgeous neutral pink.

The value of my Pretty in Paradise bag is over 36 dollars which is a great value.  I definitely will use all of the products although I am least excited over a fragrance sample.  I am quite picky about perfumes preferring clean, fresh scents.  I've yet to try the mascara although the brush seems the simple corkscrew style and smells quite chemically which makes me a bit apprehensive.  Hopefully the product will outweigh the unpleasant scent.

Here is the adorable summery print designed by Rebecca Minkoff.

In the next few days I will reveal my June Birchbox and Beauty Army products.  Perhaps we can have a battle of the boxes!  Until then have a great week.  I know I will watching the World Cup :)

Whitaker Music Festival

This Wednesday had the pleasure of the most stunning day and by good fortune had a fun activity planned to take full advantage.  If you live in the St. Louis area, you have no doubt heard about the Whitaker Music Festival at the Missouri Botanical Gardens.  This free event allows for beautiful scenery and fun music all for free.  Here a few pictures to give you a taste.

Of course no picnic is complete without yummy nibbles!

I made this addictive dip after a friend brought it to our end of the year party.  She had found it from our favorite place: PINTEREST!  Here is the original recipe. I did substitute the sour cream for low-fat Greek yogurt to make it a bit more healthy as well as changed up the corn ratio: 1 can of mixed sweet corn, 1 can of corn with peppers, and 1 can with poblano peppers.  Finally I sprinkled in some paprika and cilantro for added flavor.  Delish!  I love these recipes because it mostly dump, stir, and chill...doesn't get easier than that!

Of course no picnic is complete without a little something sweet.  This came in the form of chocolate chip banana cookies!!!!  Again here is the original recipe found from pinterest. I did all the suggested healthy substitutions: whole wheat flour, applesauce, and honey.  Next time I might do a mix of brown and white sugar or perhaps just add a bit more banana.  It was great munching on a healthy treat which I may have even snuck in a few for breakfast the next morning!

I hope you are taking advantage of the lovely summer warmth with friends and family.

Happy Friday!

Happy Friday! Ulta tip and Box #1

Hey lovelies, guess what?  It's FRIDAY!!!!  Can you tell I'm excited?  No, I don't have any big plans other than celebrating my lovely mother this Sunday of course.  I'm just looking forward to great pleasure that is sleeping in and relaxing.

I did get a chance to make an on-line order to Ulta today AND I happened to run in to the store as well.  I know, excessive, but that's what happens when I can score triple points.  Here is a little secret I didn't stumble onto until recently.  When on Ulta's website logged into your account click the "My Rewards" button.  Then check out your "Bonus Offers."  Often you can get double or triple points on your purchases but you first must activate the reward on-line.  It is as simple as a click of your mouse, but overlooking this little tip can cost you lots of extra points.

I've just hit my thousand mark and couldn't be more excited to spend that money.  I'm doing my best to save up to 2000 which translates into a $125 reward.  That is a lot of beauty products!  I think today's purchases have helped ;)

Before I log off to enjoy a tv and pjs, I thought I would show you what arrived today:
I can't wait to dig in and see my May goodies especially since it is featuring Kate Spade!!!!  Oh and I am wearing Ciate in Sugar Plum on my nails...I'm obsessed with this shade.

Hope your weekend is filled with fun and relaxation.  Happy Mother's Day to all.

Beauty Box Subscriptions: Which is right for you?

Hey lovelies!!!

I hope everyone is enjoying the warm spring weather with the promise of summer just around the corner.  Being a teacher, I am thrilled with the arrival of May ;)

Today I thought I would give some background to the many beauty subscriptions out there in case you are considering trying one out or maybe want to branch out of your current favorite. These are a great way to discover new products and sample from some of your favorite brands while discovering new ones.   Also, I highly recommend gifting subscriptions.  It is a fun, unique present that continues over a few months rather than one day of fun.

How do they work?
You begin most subscriptions by creating a profile giving some background to your preferences, skin type, etc.  Then each month the company mails you a box of samples and full-size products to try.  Often you can earn points by filling out product reviews or many send you discount codes on the month's featured brands.  The prices of boxes varies from $10 to almost $40 although if you choose to do a 3 mont, 6 month or yearly subscription most give you a discounted price.   Keep in mind though if you are signing up for your first subscription some have waitlists to join or won't send you a box until the following month.

Just so you know I currently have subscriptions to Birchbox, Ipsy, and Beauty Army which you can see my April goodies in my video: Battle of the Boxes April Edition. Also, I just subscribed for a Julep box (I finally gave in!) which I'm sure I will do a post on. In the past, I subscribed to Klutchclub and am considering trying Bulu Box.

With popularity rising for these subscriptions, I thought it might be helpful to see all the options out there.  If you want the down and dirty use this chart to quickly glance at the many options.  Following it I have a brief write up for each one.  Click the name to check out their site if you are wanting more information, to order, or just to preview previous boxes and brands available.  Happy shopping :)

Birchbox
Type: Beauty (hair, face, make-up, & lifestyle)
Price: $10 per month
Number of samples: 4-5
Gender: Women or Men
Reward Points: Yes
Discount Codes: No*
This is one of the oldest and most established subscriptions out there so they typically have a wide variety of brands including big, familiar names like Benefit, Stila, Dr. Bradt, and theBalm as well as more exclusive brands such as Cynthia Rowley, Sumita, Marcelle, and Liz Earle.  Ocassionally the boxes have themes or little lifestyle extras. If you like a product, you can buy things directly from Birchbox.com and earn additional points.  Every 100 points earns your $10 off at the store which can add up quickly!  You also can review three of your samples each month for points.
*They do offer free shipping on each month's items and occasionally have specials.

My Opinion: I have been receiving Birchbox for almost a year and half now.  Each box there is always something I can use although some months are amazing while others are just okay.  Also, I think in the beginning I appeared to get better sample sizes and the occasional full sized product along with more make-up products.  Finally I have noticed some repeat with brands such as No. 4 haircare; I've received 4 different samples from this haircare brand!

Verdict: If you are looking for an affordable box with high-end brand samples and don't mind more face and hair samples, this is the box for you.

Ipsy
Type: Beauty (hair, face, & make-up)
Price: $10 per month
Number of samples: 4-5 and bag
Gender: Women
Reward Points: Yes
Discount Codes: Yes
This subscription features some of the same brands as Birchbox as well as some exclusives such Coastal Scents, Elizabeth Mott, etc.  Their website has advice and videos, but does not sell the products. Rather they offer discount codes on most featured brands of the month and direct you to the individual brands' sites.  Also your reward points earned from reviews and sharing products are similar to Sephora's in that you choose a gift rather than get an amount off your purchase.

My Opinion: This is my fourth month with Ipsy and I have been thrilled with the sample size and variety.  They seem to offer more make-up items and minimal hair care which I prefer.  Also each box typically has at least one full size product making the value for the bag much greater than Birchbox.  Plus the reviews are typically asking for my feedback to help shape my boxes vs. how good the product is.  Finally, I love getting a new zippered bag each month.  The designs and materials vary so it feels different; plus they are super handy to have around!

Verdict: If you are looking for the best value or wanting a subscription with more make-up samples, Ipsy is the best choice.

Beauty Army
Type: Beauty (hair, face, make-up, & lifestyle)
Price: $12 per month
Number of samples: 6
Gender: Women
Reward Points: Yes
Discount Codes: No
Unlike most subscriptions, you choose your beauty samples with Beauty Army.  Each month you have a week window to pick out up to 6 samples from 9 options.  You can hint your refresh button to change your sample options as well as change the survey choices to reveal different choices.  Also, you can opt out any month with just one click, but you  must do this during your week window.  They also sell full sized products on their sight.  If you don't then they will pick out samples for you.

My Opinion: This will be my fourth month with Beauty Army as well.  So far I like being able to choose my own samples although sometimes the sample size isn't generous enough.  I've also found there are always a lot of face and hair samples with minimal make-up options.  Most months I have found enough items that I am excited about to order and I do love playing the refresh game to craft the best box for me.  If I don't find what I'm looking for, skipping is very painless as long as you remember to long during your window.  Also the cardboard boxes are deeper than Birchbox's and the lids don't stick, so I find them more useful for extra storage.

Verdict: If you don't have the cash to commit every month or are worried about the samples not being perfect for you, this is a subscription with the more control.

This was my Beauty Army box from this past March which I found pretty well-rounded.  The BB Cushion sample came in all three color ranges and the Furlesse wrinkle smoothing patches came in a set of three.  Each month the tissue wrapped samples come in a glossy cardboard hinged box.

Beauty Box 5
Type: Beauty (hair, face, & make-up)
Price: $12 per month
Number of samples: 5
Gender: Women
Reward Points: Yes
Discount Codes: No
Beauty Box sends you five deluxe sized and full-sized products a from a variety of brands.  Their twist is not in customization with profiles but rather products that everyone loves.  The brands offered are various from inexpensive companies including Secret, NYX and Hard Candy to on-line exclusives like Make Up Geek to high-end like Welda and Supergoop.

Verdict: If you want to try a similar box to Ipsy or Birch and aren't looking for only high-end products, this would be a great subscription.

Starbox
Type: Make-Up
Price: $17.68 per month ($15 + shipping)
Number of samples: 3-4 full size products
Gender: Women
Reward Points: No
Discount Codes: Yes
Starbox features only Starlooks brand cosmetics sending you three to four full sized products.  This is a great subscription to build up your make-up collection and sample pro-quality products.  They also select items each month to be on-trend and current.  Currently you don't fill out a profile and all the boxes feature the same items for all members.  Unlike most other subscriptions, you can purchase previous boxes for $25 allowing you to get the goods without a committment.

Verdict: This is an ideal choice if you are just starting a make-up collection or want to expand your basic collection with full sized items rather than sample a variety of beauty products.

Glossybox
Type: Beauty (hair, face, & make-up)
Price: $21 per month
Number of samples: 5-6
Gender: Women or Men
Reward Points: Yes
Discount Codes: No
Glossybox features more high end, luxury brands such as Ciate, Caldrea, fresh, and Burberry with a few new brands mixed in.  The samples are more generous than Birchbox although it doesn't include  lifestyle extras.  You fill out a detailed profile at the start of your subscription like most and mult-month subscriptions are available for small discounts.

Verdict: If you are looking to upgrade your Birchbox to more upscale samples or find that you rarely purchase the products on-line, Glossybox is a good fit.

Wantable.
Type: Beauty (make-up)
Price: $36 per month
Number of samples: 4-5 full size products
Gender: Women
Reward Points: Yes
Discount Codes: No
Wantable sends full-sized cosmetics from premium brands such as NCLA, Vincent Longo, and LAQA&Co. to name a few.  Subscribers seem happy with the survey saying that the boxes are tailored to your preferences.  Unlike other subscriptions, you can send back your box if you are unhappy for any reason.

Verdict: If you are wanting to build a make-up collection that isn't one brand (like Starbox) and want high end companies, this is it girls!

Julep Maven
Type: Beauty (body, face, hair, & make-up)
Price: $25 per month
Number of samples: 3 full sized products
Gender: Women
Reward Points: Yes
Discount Codes: Yes
Similar to Starbox, the Maven box is a brand exclusive box that focuses mostly on new limited edition polishes and beauty products from Julep.  Each month Julep currates 5 different boxes to choose and allows for further customization.  Your box features 2 polishes and a beauty product, 3 polishes, or 2 beauty products all full sized.  You also get 20% all Julep orders along with free shipping.  If you want to even more, you can upgrade to Maven Luxe.

My Opinion: If you love nail polish or Julep products, this is a fun choice especially now that you choose from a variety of boxes and are allowed to customize.  You are in control of which polish colors you want or which beauty products appeal most. While the price is more expensive than some subscriptions, it does feature full sized products from a quality brand.  Also you get great deals on add-on products.

Verdict: If you're a nail polish junkie or Julep fanatic, you should consider becoming a Maven to take advantage of your elaborate discounts and full sized products.
Your first box "welcome" box is actually free so it does not allow for customization.  I choose the two full-sized beauty products. The gloss I use almost daily and the body oil has been lovely as well!

Klutch Club
Type: Health (exercise, food, lifestyle, & beauty)
Price: $18 per month
Number of samples: 9-12 samples, full size products, and gift cards
Gender: Women, Men
Reward Points: Yes
Discount Codes: Yes
This subscription is all about healthy choices through a variety of exercise, food, and beauty product samples. From bars and supplements to drinks, workout gear, and organic beauty products, each month has a theme or focus delivering wellness to your door. Each box is the same so there is no personalization with this subscription. Products range from organic or holistic to outdoors and athletic giving great variety in the health focus.

My Opinion: I received Klutch Club for about a year before taking a break. It is a more expensive box although I will say the samples are very generous. One of my supplements was an entire month's supply and I still received another 8 samples in that box! I also enjoyed getting samples that were promoting healthy choices and showing me brands that I had never experienced before outside just beauty and cosmetics. The items I tried made my body feel good which gave me a positive energy boost.

Verdict: If you are wanting some inspiration for healthier lifestylechoices, are a fitness fan, or organic and natural products matter, this is a great choice.

Bulu Box
Type: Health (exercise, nutrition, & diet)
Price: $10 per month
Number of samples: 4-5 samples
Gender: Mixed
Reward Points: Yes
Discount Codes: No
Bulu Box focuses on health, exercise and weight loss products giving you a chance to try them out. You have two choices: the Bulu Box or Bulu Weight Loss though both feature items to promote health and wellness. After each box, you fill out a survey to earn points that can be redeeming on full sized products.

Verdict: If you don't have the extra money for KlutchClub, this is great choice for the health conscious person or wanting an easy way to introduce healthy choices into your life.

Travelbox
Type: Lifestyle (beauty, snacks, & travel)
Price: $26 per month
Number of samples: 5-6 travel and full sized products
Gender: Mixed
Reward Points: No
Discount Codes: No
This newer subscription is all about travel goodies from guides and maps to games and travel comforts like candles, eye masks, and ear plugs.  Boxes also include a premium snack such as the Guylian chocolates from the Founder's Day Box.  There is no profile to fill out and each month a single currated box is sent to all members.

Verdict: If you travel frequently or have a case of wanderlust, this is a fun, opulant subscription.  This could make a great gift for a friend or family member who is constantly on-the-go.

I hope you find this helpful.  I'd love to hear which subscriptions you enjoy or are lusting over in the comments below.

My New Favorite Hair Tool

Greetings from New Orleans!  Brigitte (my bestie) and I arrived last night and have been loving the city so far.  Posts are coming soon and some vlogs on youtube to show our adventures.

Just before I left an exciting package arrived: my new NuMe curling iron set!!!!  I had been lusting over a high end curling iron for some time and after months of watching my favorite bloggers and youtubers create gorgeous curls with them, I broke down and bought one.

Now before you tut at the price tag (it retails for $280), you should know I got a deal which happens to make me super happy.  I love discovering an item I truly want/need, knowing it is quality, and then getting a deal on it.  Recently I started a subscription to Ipsy which I am absolutely loving by the way.  A less discussed benefit of this service is the coupon codes to the many brands featured each month.  Unlike Birchbox or the other subscriptions who sell products on their site, Ipsy directs you to the individual company sites.  Normally this doesn't appeal to me since I am not racking up points, scoring samples, or free gifts plus normally shipping is outrageous.  HOWEVER, this time around it gave me an fantastic deal on the very curling iron set I had been wanting.  Score!  Plus I recieved a free curling iron.  Double Score!

Why this set you may be asking?  Unlike other curling irons, this one has detachable wands with a single base.  Rather than spending a hundred or more for each curling iron, you get everything you could want in a single set!

The lustrum set includes 19mm, 25mm, 32mm, 13mm-25mm reverse wand, and pearl.

Another bonus is how easy it is to travel with.  It comes with a storage case that rolls up to save space while already having spots for everything in the kit.  Love it!

The infrared iron heats up to 410 degrees quickly and the negative ion technology helps tames the frizz.  Here are my before and after shots using the reverse wand before enjoying beautiful NOLA.

Remember if you're an Ipsy member check out the coupon code to score 50% off, free shipping, and a free curling wand.  Oh and the offer is good through May 15th!  If you aren't an Ipsy member, check out the flash sales on NuMe's website or keep an eye on HauteLook.

My Beauty Stash

I don't know if you're anything like me, but some of my favorite posts and videos are seeing other people's make up collections.  There is something so intriguing peeking into people's homes and no I don't mean that in the peeping Tom sort of way. Since it is a favorite I figured it would a be a great first post.  Now this is just a taste of my collection.  More will be coming, perhaps even in video form.......!

Until then enjoy taking a peek.
